In this film, we meet the legendary showman Flo Ziegfeld in Paradise, where he looks down upon the world and muses over the sort of show he'd be putting on were he still alive. His "dream" show is populated almost exclusively by MGM stars.

  • MGM's all-star revue spared no expense in showing off the studio's gallery of stars in lush, Technicolor settings; the film ranges from the sublime ("This Heart of Mine" and "Limehouse Blues," both danced by Fred Astaire & Lucille Bremer; "The Great Lady Gives an Interview" with Judy Garland; "Love" with Lena Horne) to the silly (a brace of hoary old vaudeville sketches and Kathryn Grayson singing the finale, "There's Beauty Everywhere.")

  • Highlights "The Great Lady Has an Interview" (Judy Garland) and "The Babbitt and the Bromide" (Fred Astaire and Gene Kelly together) are not enough to elevate this pastiche to masterpiece, but the various segments stay true to the Follies premise. Each segment is its own chapter on the DVD. No need to watch it in sequence, or even to watch the whole thing, since there is no plot.

  • I didn't know it was going to be in sketch format but it was pretty cool. A spectacular show i could say. Even with 2 hours of singing and dancing. The costumes and the sets were beautiful. And can we talk about that cast?

  • A fine collection of elaborate short stories that use the sound stage to great effect - all including dance or singing numbers with the stars lining up to appear!

  • If I could go back in time to this era,I would make it a mission to see the real Ziegfeld Follies, but this will have to do.I don't care what reviews are here,I could eat this film with a spoon ! I admit to indulging in it everytime I see it's on TCM

  • Ziegfeld Follies is a decent film. It is about the late, great impresario Florenz Ziegfeld looks down from heaven and ordains a new revue in his grand old style. The music is great. William Powell, Judy Garland, and Lucille Ball give good performances. The script is okay because it drags a little in some places of the film. I liked watching this movie because of the comedy and music.

  • Though not all the performances were extraordinary, there certainly are a fair few that were outstanding (Fred Astaire's, Gene Kelly's and Red Skelton's performances particularly impressed).

  • I liked 'Number, Please', 'When Television Comes', and 'The Babbit and the Bromide' a lot, but I LOVED 'Sweepstakes Ticket' :)

  • Some of the comedy bits don't work that well, but the musical numbers that do work are often genius and sublime. I love the last number with the bubbles.

  • It would be more entertaining if it wasn't so hit or miss. Some were great like Gene Kelly and Fred Astaire's dance, or Judy Garland's satire of Hollywood stars. But then there were some just uninspired, boring numbers or sketches.

  • The Ziegfeld Follies were a middlebrow imitation of real burlesque and vaudeville, and this film tribute is even more middlebrow, and uneven. Best segment is Fred Astaire and Gene Kelly's dance-off (Astaire FTW). Worst: pretty much all the comedy except Red Skelton's.

  • I gave it 3 1/2 stars because the only performances I loved were Judy Garland's of course cause she is just amazing! And Gene Kelly's ....the rest I don't care about

  • This movie doesn't exactly have a story, it's more of a showcase of song and dance numbers starring many great actors. A nice picture of the Ziegfeld Follies.

  • Fun. I especially liked the section with Fred Astaire and Gene Kelly dancing together. I definitely found a little more inspiration for how to look in my show.
