Ultimately, Timeless' season two premiere hits the ground running and never lulls or loses focus.

While Season 1 was all about establishing our heroes, it appears that the big initiative in Season 2 was to work on spicing up the villains and playing up their own difficulties with messing with time.

The Time Team is officially back, and the premiere episode teases a sophomore season that's tighter, smarter, and still a hell of a lot of fun.

The show appears to have kept the ingredients that work, such as the chemistry between characters and the historical hijinx, and switched up the elements that needed tweaking.

It's not just back. It's here with more spirit and energy and focus, displaying a willingness to reset the status quo without leaving the events of the first season in the dust.

When I say Timeless is playing like it has nothing to lose, I'm talking about the show's narrative as well as its meta-narrative.

Let's just blow it and start over! That's what literally happened... And you know what? The series is actually more coherent now.

Overall, the series has returned with a much better understanding of where its strengths and weaknesses are, and how to bring out the former as much as possible.

So far, the show still has plenty of the B-movie gunfights and ridiculous anachronisms which characterized its initial appeal. Let's just hope the mounting conspiracies and exhausting twists don't dilute the retro-escapist vibe.

If audiences are willing to come aboard the lifeboat one more time, we could be looking at a real turnaround for Timeless' success. A turnaround that is sure to please all parties involved.
