Following the sudden, violent death of their best mate, four young men reunite for a hike through the Scandinavian wilderness. Deep in the black, Nordic forest they find themselves lost in a hell of sinister nightmares and pagan sacrifices. For these ancient woods are home to a malevolent deity which will force them to face the darkness inside themselves.

  • A pretty standard lost-in-the-woods horror tale, but with some genuinely unsettling moments that linger in the memory after the credits have rolled.

  • Interesting story, but I wish it was fleshed out a little more. Worth a watch.

  • One can compare every movie made today to a number of previous movies and thus rate it by comparison. Or one can take the movie by itself. Senn thus, The Ritual is fanstastiv. Excellent acting, splendid photography and ... atmosphere. Anyone who has been in a deep Northern European forest will confirm that there is an eerie element to it.

  • This movie was exactly as it was supposed to be, a suspense driven thriller abt four guys who take the short cut through a forest as if they've never seen a horror movie that cautions against such a move. However, it was gripping right from the start and I thought the atmosphere, mood and underlying story seen at the beginning was entertaining. If you like horror movies that solely focus on a small group's battle with something unknown albeit horrible hunting them down, you'll enjoy this movie. I didn't find it obscure or confusing in any way. Enjoy!

  • Pretty good movie, with some small scares, but nothing that will scare the heck out of you. Enjoyable

  • Pretty good--the end is crazy enough to make this a not-so-common horro-in-the-woods movie.

  • The movie contains solid elements for a good flick. There is a happy beginning and then something horrible happens to the protagonist, leading to the element of guilt. Then there is a dilemma in the twisting of the knee. So the four friends decide to take a shortcut in their adventure and run into a scary and creepy environment. Now there is a suspenseful and creepy tone to the film. There are mysteries that need to be solved. Eventually there is maturity and the element of moving on from past regret. And a sort of happy ending. Good movie that will keep you on edge and entertain you until the last minute.

  • Formulaic to a fault. The Ritual is a generic, splatter romp that elevates itself from the pack with genuinly disturbing imagery and scenes of great tension. It's instantly forgettable and it's cast of 'lads' are archetypes in every way possible but if you go down to the woods with 'The Ritual' you're in for a pretty good time.

  • One of the better Netflix horror movies. It's got a dawning horror factor that builds throughout the story as the characters get lost deeper in the woods of Sweden.

  • Still thinking about this one days after I watched it. Yes, the only big flaw I also noticed was the injured Dom saying he was done the moment he got hurt, but then continued on recklessly into unknown territory when they could have gone back, but the creature was very well done, the slow burn tension was well done, and I ended up enjoying this much more than I thought I would.

  • Gripping! my heart was beating hard and fast the whole time, i was too scared to get out off my couch! this movie really handled the witchcraft genre very well, as it's not done very often (and when it is, it's difficult-to-view found footage, or has a non-specific, or depressing ending). it was also refreshing to see a horror flick not based on ghosts or zombies. *pulls party poppers !!*some people are saying that four men being trapped in the woods is "cliche" and formulaic . it seems that writers can't produce a horror story set in the spooky woods lest they be called unoriginal, i suppose soon it will be 'unoriginal' for aliens to from down from space and not from the ocean or a cave etc etc.

  • It was a typical Saturday evening for me this weekend. I was ready to have my dinner and was wondering to watch a movie on Netflix. I stumbled upon Netflix's "The Ritual", its trailer was intriguing enough to convince me to watch it. I pulled together my meal and ended up on my sofa and started watching this movie. The plot of this Netflix movie was interesting, to be honest, it was a decently new storyline, enough to keep me hooked. The story is about four friends who decide to take an adventurous trip to Swedish woods instead of the lively metropolitan of Amsterdam. They decide to take on an adventurous hike after one of their group members unexpectedly gets killed in a liquor store robbery. Luke, the lead character of the movie is unable to save his friend's life and the memory of this event endlessly haunts him. As they take on this trip, one of the group members gets a sore knee leading them to switch their route and cross the deep jungle. The four friends, with already strained friendships, plans to take on this detour unaware of the possible threat that will come up their way. Each night that they spend in the jungle is filled with horrifying experiences. Soon they realize that they are being followed by something which is not only strange but is also not human. The haunting dreams follow them every night and they realize that the forest is occupied by a monster, who kills every human that gets in its way. The worshiping cult of the forest believes this monster as their god and one of the Jötunn (word used for ancient Nordic giant). The monster looks interesting with its massive and interesting bodily composure. Also, the way it plays with the mind of its prey is something which I've never really seen in any other movie. "The Ritual" seems intriguing and scary. The movie, however, ends a little too abruptly, leaving you with a lot of questions in the mind. However, it is a good one to watch if you are up for something new and exciting.

  • A decent film of the genre lost-in-the-woods-can't-get-out-while-being-stalked-by-something. While trying to avoid a spoiler - the build up to the four friends meeting their stalker is good as is the actual circumstances of what they're up against are not what you would normally expect. All four actor do a good job of developing their characters for such a constrained film. Decent, but not spectacular.
