6.4 The Discovery
Drama, Romance, Science Fiction & Fantasy
In the near future, the world is off-balance. People have gained a specific knowledge, and death has lost meaning, due to a breakthrough scientific discovery by Dr. Thomas Harbor (Robert Redford): There is now definitive proof of an afterlife. While countless people have chosen suicide in order to "re-set" their existence, others go on, trying to decide what it all means. Among them is Dr. Harbor's son Will (Jason Segel), who has arrived at his father's isolated compound with a mysterious young woman named Isla (Rooney Mara). There, they discover the strange acolytes who help Dr. Harbor with his experiments. They are all looking to Dr. Harbor for meaning. Can Will and Isla find peace - in this place, or on the other side?

  • A reasonable attempt at speculating what lies behind the veil. The movie is interesting and well paced until the ending, where it all moves a little too quickly to understand what exactly what is going on. Thankfully Wikipedia exists so it can be explained to those of us who didn't quite get the ending. Jason Siegel is likable and believable in a serious role. Redford is fine, but is underused. It's no Jacob's Ladder (God spare us the impending remake of THAT), but it leaves an uneasy feeling and can make you question your very existence, as movies of this nature should do.

  • It's a complex movie, with an interesting concept, but sadly too popular these days. There are a lot of movies that visit this afterlife idea, and it get's cliche, even though the movie is great. So the pacing of the movie is just right, and we spend just enough time with the characters to care for them. Amazing directing style, I loved it, but you have to have some patients with it. Also great job by the actors, great delivery. The twist was the point of the movie that is entertaining and deep, but at the same time it's instantly cliche and somewhat a let down. Overall it's a great movie, but it's a crowded genre these days so it's getting boring even though this was one of the better title of that genre. Good movie!

  • Strengths: Mostly known for his comedic chops, it's interesting to see Jason Segel (Will) in a dramatic role. He does great here and is one of the highlights of the film. You can clearly see how this character is dealing with the resentment he feels towards his father for what happened to his mother, as well as understand why he's reluctant about the discovery. His chemistry with the very talented Rooney Mara (Isla) is another strong point of the movie. The concept and execution of the film is very original and feels like a breath of fresh air in a very crowded sci-fi field. It manages to be relatable and pack an emotional punch, which is missing from a lot of movies like this that tend to feel hollow.Weaknesses: As much as I enjoyed the first two-thirds or so of this movie, the ending left a lot to be desired. It was interesting to see things get revealed in the fashion that they do, but it came across like they were trying to add a lot and it felt tacked on. It's almost as if the final ten minutes don't belong with the rest of the movie. I felt like things were resolved and they just threw another wrench into things that didn't seem to belong. Overall: It's an intelligent, ambitious sci-fi movie that does a great job of grabbing and holing your attention. It's beautifully shot and well acted, but it suffers from a bad ending that holds it back from being a truly great film. It's a shame because everything up to that point was among the best things I've seen in a Netflix movie.

  • A bold, shocking journey into the metaphysical bolstered by a riveting mystery, a brilliant cast, and a fantastic dramatic performance from the underrated Segel. Original, inventive and compelling filmmaking.

  • Good premise. Turns a bit slow and overly melodramatic

  • THE DISCOVERY- 60%A very intriguing idea which could have done so much more. Well with the same concept of The OA, The discovery follows a different path in the uncanny theories of the afterlife. The OA, in contrary to movies like the Discovery, and I Origins, satisfied with enough creativity and information for the story. With that being said, The OA was a series and not a movie. The story might be something very big to handle for a short 2 hour production. However, I still think the Discovery could have done mountains more. The first half of the show was very slow, boring, and not ideal. The second half was much better. The screenplay was good, but not memorable. Story wise and execution: 2.2/3.5Acting: 1.6/2.5Camera work: 1.7/2Sound: 0.5/2Overall Score: 3/5

  • Unusual story, but it kept my interest throughout. I liked the ending also, very uplifting. Also loved Redford and Rooney Mara's acting in it. Both of them at the top of their game.

  • Wanted so much more. - the fantasy. Was difficult for me follow... the actors would be rated at a 4+ as I believe this was not a fully finished script for them to perform their 5 star potential.

  • Fans of the old Twilight Zone teevee series might enjoy this ramble through the woods of dreamstate as a scientist and his sons try to solve the question of whether there's an afterlife or no. Nearly English in feel, it takes it's time getting to the payoff, and that might be a problem for some, but there's definitely something going on here.

  • Interesting premise, but the delivery is not very entertaining. Wasted idea but still worth the watch from my point of view. Not that bad

  • What happens when science proves there is an afterlife? Fascinating premise explores existential questions without going into the murky waters of religion, but insinuating the devastating effect it might have on people's motivations for valuing life appropriately.
