Crackling mystery series a great choice for tweens and up.

A supernatural story that's mercifully free of superheroes. An environmental and humanist warning. Evil aliens among us. Small-town cops vs. the FBI. It's all deliciously promising.

If you're familiar with... most genre series that have debuted in the way of Lost, you also know that it's best not to overthink this noise, because the show probably isn't going to be with us for long. Which is too bad, given that it stars Steve Zahn.

The Crossing has a European feel and a more deliberate pace to match. That's a good thing, but without other episodes, it's not easy to assess the real potential of The Crossing. Fingers crossed on this one.

Even though the premise of The Crossing seems like it's another TV show that should really be a movie or limited series and not an ongoing drama, the pilot offers some decent twists, welcome casting against type and a somewhat intriguing plot.

The primary job of a TV pilot is to intrigue viewers, and The Crossing accomplishes that.

The first episode is pretty good. My advice? Don't watch it...The odds of us actually getting to the end of this are slim to none. Far more often than not, ABC cancels shows like this without giving viewers any closure.

The Crossing has just enough going for it to invite a second look.
