In the early 1980s, the most feared battle MC in Queens, New York, was a fierce teenage girl with the weight of the world on her shoulders. At the age of 14, Lolita "Roxanne Shanté" Gooden was well on her way to becoming a hip-hop legend as she hustled to provide for her family while defending herself from the dangers of the streets of the Queensbridge Projects in NYC.

  • Gritty, violent bio of '80s rap star is ultimately hopeful.

  • It was an ordinary life story with no major events. It started strong though, I admired the mother character but the rest was quite mediocre and I didn't enjoy the music much as well.

  • Very good movie. The struggles that she went through in this movie is something that is too familiar to me. The lead actress did a wonderful playing Roxanne. I appreciated the good storytelling to this film. It's one of Netflix best original films. The cast did good, the directing was good, and also, the cinematography was awesome. I recommend watching this film. It might make a lot of audiences uncomfortable due to the relationship between young Roxanne, and an older man, Cross.

  • newcomer Chante Adams who plays Roxanne Shante is miraculous playing one of the most successful rappers of the 1980sand she was only 14 when she started making her own music to escape the abuse of her mother, the rough life of the projects, and to earn enough money to surviveher whole intention was to insert the family vibe back into the music industry seeing that a lot of the men she knew were not living up to their responsibilities and not being good to their womenno one receives flowers as a gesture anymore unless someone diesNia Long is also spectacular playing her mother projecting onto her family since she was hurt so bad and mistreated by so many menin relatiation Chante wanted to be a kid but the chance for her to rap allowed her to grow up fast even if she wasn't ready for all of itit's really one of the rare biopics focusing on a strong woman whose influence really adds to the world of hip-hopfeels long but breaks the traditional mold of similar stories portrayed

  • Not bad, but my issue is that they could have added an extra hour to show he back on the rise and how she finagled her record company to pay for her education at a University and her finally reaching her goals. Instead, they stopped when she got her child back and was in good standings with her mother. Another issue I have with the movie at the end there should have been content as to what happened after the end scene. You know the content that tells you what they did, wht they accomplished, Roxane's university degrees and so forth. They did none of that and for that I was disapointed.
