A group of friends venture into the wilds of Australia to study an ancient rock painting, and comes face to face with an ancient evil when one of them experiences a terrifying transformation. The excursion was going great until Mel decided to go skinny-dipping in a nearby basin, and emerges bloodied and confused. Later, when Mel starts to sprout razor sharp teeth and appears to turn rabid, her friends become the prey in a vicious, bloody hunt. Before long yet another one of them begins showing signs of infection, prompting the rest of the group to fight for their lives with everything they've got. Retreating into a cave as a last, desperate measure, the remaining survivors discover that the mysterious painting they came to study could hold the secret to the horrifying curse.

  • "Primal" is an Australian outback horror film, and while it follows a few of the cliches of the genre, it is still a reasonably creepy film. When a group of campers head to the outback, a couple get afflicted with a primal desire to kill and maim. The basic gist is exactly as anyone who has seen a horror movie will think, except for one extremely weird scene at the end that I won't spoil, but doesn't really fit with the rest of the narrative.Still, for an Aussie spook movie, it isn't bad.

  • A good time had by all!!! I have to say that I didn't hate it. I watched it all, and found the creatures mighty interesting...Not a great movie, but entertaining enough for me, I guess.

  • Not the widest gamut of screenwriting, but saved with cinematography and cutting the fat out in direction.

  • At first I thought this was going to be a total rip-off of The Descent. Turned out to be better than I expected, but as is the bane of many horror movies, the ending was lacking.

  • Aussie kids get stuck in the middle of water and a couple of them turn into zombies and start attacking the rest of the group. Gore count good.

  • Not as bad as expected, tons of laughs intentional or not.

  • this film was extremely impressive for a small-budget flick. The monsters got progressively more and more terrifying and by the end things were way out of control. This film mirrors other films such as The Descent and Shrooms where a group of young adults goes snooping around in the woods. There were a few interesting camera tricks and stunts that made this far more immersible than i thought it would be. The story was a little bit muddled in places but this type of film really only needs to focus on the fight for survival and can drop the complex back-stories. The costuming and makeup departments did an excellent job. This film even was able to capture a mythical feel due to the cave drawings.SUMMARY: A very good film! Recommended if you are not in the mood for a big blockbuster but you want some quality terror.

  • Surprisingly fun take on zombies and aliens. Budget problems led to some lackluster effects, but it's still a great ride in a beautiful setting.

  • I've heard that critics mark a film, on it's intelligence, style, plot line, performances and dialogue. I tend to do things a bit differently, i mark it on how entertaining it was. This movie was very entertaining, it had horror, humour, emotion thrown in the mix and it was never boring. SO MUCH FUN! BAM! THAT'S MY MARK!

  • B-I really wanted to give this movie 4 stars. The acting was great, the gore was great, the setting was great, everything was great! But the ending...was really bad. The effects they used were cheesy and I really wished they took the ending in a different direction. Well other than the ending the movie was really good!

  • In the depths of the Australian Outback a group goes searching for ancient cave paintings only to find much more than they bargained for ... Look for some suspenseful moments and a heap o'gore in this not original but still effective horror outing.

  • Went in with little to no expectation, but enjoyed Primal for it's fantastical horror, relatively poor CG, and spooky premise. Impressed with Krew Boylan, check her out.

  • IFC seems to be on a roll making solid little horror films of late and this one is no exception. While it seems to borrow heavily from established horror conventions and even resembles a few horror staples, The Evil Dead seeming to be the main one, the film still feels 'new' thanks in large part to its hyper energy, a likeable cast, some outstanding gory moments and even a few well placed jumps. Recommended for fans of the old school approach to horror.
