  • Incredible emotional with John Boyega absolutely killing the role.

  • Really enjoyed this movie, despite it being predictably sad and disheartening. John Boyenga is like a Denzel clone in this movie, in a good way. 8.5/10.

  • Imperial Dreams is a solid film but one with a story that is overly familiar. It does do a good job of framing the corrupt nature of the rehabilitation cycle in America, but doesn't stop it from feeling like a film I've seen many times before.

  • One of my top 3 favorites. Relentlessly honest examination into the life of an aspirational black man.

  • (4.5 out of 6 Stars)When we see some doors open for us but many doors close on us to be left out with little to survive, few to help and somethings that hold us back we can't escape. When we see we made all our life's decisions based on ourselves when we should be thinking of others to never experience such a thing. When doors might not open for us but for others we do it all for that's empowering enough to know we can still turn things around with time while we don't hold others back. When all we don't want to see is the wrong doors closing on us and the right ones opening for us to get a second chance on the inside.

  • An extremely well made, thought "light" tale of an ex-con in the bad part of LA wanting to make a better difference for the benefit of his son. Imperial Dreams will give viewers the harsh reality a man has to face formerly being in person, only as a result of his violent upbringing, growing up in a family of gangsters and con men. These men and women are real. While many deserve the ill treatment bestowed upon them for their crimes, many others, as a result of improper upbringing, are blamed and slammed, with small hope of retaining an attempt at normal life, whether it's laws and probation, or family forcing you back in the dangerous business. The ending feels extremely lacking, aside from that problem, very well made realistic drama with a great lead performance by Star Wars's, John Boyega!

  • This shows just how much of a talent John Boyega is and why he went on to do bigger things. You may think you know the story of the futility of life after prison, but this is a fresh approach, that actually moves you more than you may realise.

  • A realistic and dramatic depiction that showcases Boyega's acting skills. A young father returns home from jail eager to care for his son and become a writer, but crime, poverty and a flawed system threaten his plans.I had heard of this film when I was researching John Boyega prior to the release of "Star Wars: The Force Awakens" and saw this film on his resume. I was interested in it but I didn't have a good outlet for access to the film. The film was finally released on Netflix and I watched it ASAP. John Boyega is a fantastic actor. I'm surprised this guy didn't make headlines earlier in his career because he really is a fantastic actor. This guy can play multiple roles and I'd love to see him in more dramas. Everyone in the film was good overall, but Boyega easily stole the show. This felt like a realistic depiction of the life that some have to live through in rough areas. What makes it even harder is trying to care for a child in the middle of all of it. What this movie did was it kept you on the edge at all times, even if nothing was necessarily happening. It just felt like it was a stressful situation 24/7 and that they were never really safe. The movie did a good job and the screenplay was great. The film felt a bit slow at times and I wasn't completely encapsulated. I felt like I was wanting just a little bit more, but that's just my personal opinion. In fact, there's nothing really wrong with the movie, but on a likability scale, it's not the best film I've ever seen. It's a really well made film and I think people should give it a chance, especially considering it's free on Netflix instant watch. In the end, "Imperial Dreams" is a solid film and a must see on Netflix.

  • John Boyega is a father that is released from jail and tries to get back on his feet while taking care of his son. It is a commentary on the American incarceration system and the struggle people have to go through to emerge from poverty. Boyega shows that he can carry a movie and hopeful he does more things like this when he isn't busy with Star Wars. The movie only on Netflix.

  • Extremely well acted, and I get it: realism is the ticket. Sometimes, just sometimes, I want to see the light at the end of the tunnel - not to be treated like I'm 5 years old, but some show of a happy ending would be great in these "realism" films.
