Combining dark comedy with dramatic intrigue, Gringo joyrides across the border into Mexico, where all is not as it seems for mild-mannered American businessman Harold Soyinka (David Oyelowo). Crossing the line from citizen to criminal, Harold tangles with duplicitous business partners, Mexican drug lords, international mercenaries, and the DEA. As he attempts to survive in one of the most dangerous places on earth, the question lingers: is this ordinary man in way over his head, or is he two steps ahead? Directed by Nash Edgerton, who made his feature length directorial debut with the acclaimed Australian thriller The Square, Gringo also stars Joel Edgerton, Amanda Seyfried, Charlize Theron, Yul Vazquez, Thandie Newton, and Sharlto Copley. Financed by Amazon Studios, the film is written by Anthony Tambakis and Matthew Stone, and produced by Rebecca Yeldham, Nash Edgerton, Beth Kono, A.J. Dix, Charlize Theron and Anthony Tambakis.

  • While you couldn't accurately explain this movie in 3 minutes, one of its downfalls while marketing the film, it is one of the best action comedies, strike that, comedic action dramas in many years. It's like an Ocean's 11/Traffic hybrid, but instead of Soderbergh we have an equally thoughtful filmmaker named Nash Edgerton. It is quite sad to see this .get no respect as it is an original story as opposed to the repeated muck that makes all the money. So be the bad reviews, this movie will gain a following and be loved by many for years to come..

  • Gringo won't be hailed as a classic action/comedy in the making, but it does give its rather talented cast some room to do some entertaining things with their characters.

  • This movie was a lot of fun. I think the people that did not like it thought they were going to see a goofy comedy, but instead got a dark comedy.

  • Despite of reviews I read, I was pleasantly surprised by the quality of this film. Quality acting accompanying a delightful script kept the audience's attention throughout. Adult violence and situations were offset by light comedy and an interesting story. Highly recommended.

  • Maybe the secret to enjoying movies is going with low expectations. This movie rates so low simply because it was mismarketed, positioning it as a comedy. It is much more interesting than that. It is a series of coincidences thrilled. Filming is rough but acting, directing, and script are solid. Seen much worse, much more highly rated movies.

  • A very funny story about shady corporate practices and some employees getting tangled up with the cartel, organized crime and FBI. With superb performances from Chalize Theron and David Oyelowo, Gringo was an absolutely hilarious bloodbath...

  • i liked the fact that the poor main star had more bad luck hit him every 5 minutes and it never stopped. i thought it was really quite ridiculous, but it held the theme very well, and that counts for a lot with me. it could have been a lot more creative in the writing rather than just violence violence violence while the plot was more of a trickery thriller plot. go with one or the other I say.

  • In the "professional" reviews I've read saying this movie has no point or subtext the reviewers are clearly not in possession of the ability to read between the lines. This is a satire pointing out the very real issues of how crooked wealthy predominately white capitalists in the U.S. use other countries to produce their drugs, take advantage of socio-economically disadvantaged folks to move their product (Miles) and use African American "middle managers" (Harold) in the states to take the fall for them, both with the law and the various illegal entities all while they sit in their penthouses and profit. I could go more in depth but I don't want to spoil the twists. If you are able to pay attention, not have your movie handed to you, and enjoy progressive messages about the ways the capitalist system allows for exploitation of labor as well as commentary on racism. This movie is for you.

  • Gringo is muy bueno! Glad I saw this hilarious crime comedy in theaters because the production value is actually really impressive considering it was an indie produced and released by a streaming company. Fortunately, Amazon Studios commitment to quality is vastly superior to Netflix which appears more concerned with quantity as they release Netflix Original films faster than pornos and on lower budgets. Gringo does not have much of a plot and the first two acts are mostly build up to a story that is over before it begins but the film is fun, the cast (especially David Oyelowo) is excellent, and the character development is some of the best I've ever seen. Despite one or two missed opportunities involving the anti-buddy dynamic between Oyelowo's good guy dork and Sharlto Copley's spiritually-conflicted mercenary, Gringo hits the mark consistently and I can't remember the last time I enjoyed going to the movies this much.
