  • I give this 3 stars for action and add one, what the hell, for the acting. Not sure Mel ever got above 3 stars himself, but I liked the plot; kind of original and clever in places. I also liked the action. But I really don't like the "damsel in distress' that seems such a damned trope in hollywood. Oh well...

  • I feel like I have to qualify every review I make of a Mel Gibson film, so yes, he is an awful, crazy person, but oh man was this an great movie! Mel is a nameless getaway driver on the run with two million in cash, who is arrested by Mexican police within the first two minutes of the film and thrown into jail where he schemes to escape and recover his money. The story and main character have a hard-boiled, lean efficiency that's enthralling, and both also have a nasty violent edge that may not be to the tastes of all viewers (blood and guts Mel co-wrote and produced the film), but much of this is played for for comedy. I really don't want to ruin any of the story beyond the set-up, but Mel uses his wits, charms, guns, and fists to survive a prison like you've never seen. "Edge of Darkness" was somewhat of a return to action for Mel, but this film is undeniably a return to the giddy violent action of "Lethal Weapon" or "Payback", which this film could easily have been a sequel (Mel's character at one point references a partner double crossing him with his wife). Strangely, Mel chose not to release the film theatrically in the US and decided to show it Video-On-Demand instead, but I can kind of see his reasoning, as there are some pretty rough non-Hollywood elements in the film that you would certainly never see in most mainstream action films. Overall, if you're in the mood for "Payback" by way of "Bring Me the Head of Alfredo Garcia", then this is the film for you!

  • Vintage Mel Gibson, this could've easily been the successful sequel to Payback which is one of my favorite movies. I was surprised at how entertaining of a film this was. Definitely recommend it.

  • Payback-lite. A fun, light action/revenge movie which will remain entertaining on repeat watchings, but is not near the top of the Mel Gibson library

  • This Mel Gibson led crime thriller for the most part hinges on his performance but the rest of the cast is decent, I like the plot, the action is great, got plenty of visual style going for it and some of the script works it is however narratively predictable and it hardly shines a positive light on Mexico and its citizens.

  • Mel Gibson is a great actor and this movie is amazing. The plot is perfect, I loved the way it was filmed and the Mexican actors kick ass too. Super entertaining!

  • Mel Gibson alone makes this movie worthwhile with his smartass charisma. The storyline is also interesting enough to keep you in tune throughout it's rather short run time with fast but logical pace. 'Get the Gringo' is certainly an underrated piece within Mel Gibson's long list of filmography/

  • Get the Gringo is a nice return to form for actor Mel Gibson. He plays an unknown criminal with a ton of cash, arrested at the Mexican border. Two corrupt cops shove him into a weird Mexican prison, filled with shops, guns, and a whole ecosystem inside. The voiceover kind of drags the film down, but its a fun action packed mystery thriller action film with lots of good scenes. Its definitely an enjoyable film for sure.

  • An excellently-crafted movie that somehow flew under the radar.

  • Say what you will about Mel Gibson the man, Mel Gibson the actor can be very watchable, especially in these rough-around-the-edges, anti-hero roles. This film requires a bit of suspension of disbelief (a prison city? Really?) but once you accept the premise, the action is fairly compelling thanks to Driver's (Gibson) one-step-ahead scheming. It won't win Oscars, but I enjoyed it for the most part. Just...turn off your brain a little. Especially near the end.

  • It is a so-so movie. I mean, I liked it, but not really inclined to watch it a 2nd time or something.
