5.8 Cub (Welp)
Drama, Horror, Action & Adventure, Art House & International
A feral child stalks a group of Cub Scouts on a weekend excursion into the woods in this menacing tale of terror from Belgium. As the rambunctious scouts make their way into the woods, troubled 12-year-old Sam (Maurice Luijten) seems to be the only one who takes the stories of a vicious child named Kai who is rumored to attack unsuspecting campers at night. When darkness falls and bullied Sam catches a glimpse of Kai, his repeated attempts to warn his troupe fall on deaf ears. But it isn't long until the body count starts to rise, and no one can deny the truth - something deadly is lurking in the shadows, and it has come to prey on them. Surprisingly, Sam soon begins to develop a tenuous bond with the strange child. But Kai isn't the only threat out there, and it won't be long now before Sam discovers the true meaning of fear. Zombi's Steve Moore provides the synth-heavy score for this grim horror thriller. ~ Jason Buchanan, Rovi

  • Well-made "slasher in the woods" type of film that wouldn't have the guts to be as brutal, if it were made in the States. One of the bestow its type that I've seen in awhile.

  • a cub camp share stories about a demonstration in the woods only to find that the stories are true.

  • It safely follows most rules and conventions for a horror slasher film but manages to have enough creativity in its enviroment and in its characters, even if it looses itself a few times along the way,

  • Overall effective horror/thriller, not perfect but not bad for a film debut, it does build tension and move fast and is never boring, I will say though that this cub scout troop has to be the worst ever, the scouts and leaders are all pretty clueless and just not good people, no one is that likable, also I get the ending and am fine with it, but looking back I don't know how logistically possible it was for that to have gone down, there's also some things that they definitely should have explained more, and there's some plot points that they don't even conclude they just leave hanging, but oh well i think the director does have skill and hopefully with a better script next time can do a better job

  • Weird Belgian horror. Starts off like a kids flick and then it turns right nasty. One scene in particular is quiet disturbing.

  • not a bad little horror movie. a few different movies come to mind while watching this but it holds its own while continuing through with the story. a bit predictable in the last act with a few jump scares and a couple intense moments, not a terrible watch.

  • A refreshing little love letter composed from an obvious horror fan to the rest of us, Cub expertly mashes together Lord of the Flies-like drama, survivalist thriller, and nostalgic late 70s/early 80s slasher into one (surprisingly) taut, cohesive whole. The solid acting, cinematography, gore, and slight social commentary perfectly fit this simple yet compelling story of bullying and social ostracization. There is not a moment of fat in the film, and we couldn't take our eyes from it. As this is a fairly gory pic involving violence to (and at the hands of) young kids (and animals), some viewers may shirk, considering the concept taboo. But that's one of horror's many opportunities: to show us in graphic detail what we know happens in the world but which we refuse to speak of aloud. In the end, Cub is a horror movie for horror lovers, not unlike We Are Still Here, You're Next, or House of the Devil. And for genre fans, it absolutely delivers in every way.

  • A young boy goes away on camp with his fellow Scouts, he is an outcast and not well liked by the other boys. He sees things in the woods that scare him, he warns the others that there will be trouble but everyone thinks he is telling stories and it just alienates him even further. LIttle do they know there is something in the woods that wants blood.A nice little slasher from Belgium, it builds up to a bloody final 20 minutes or so but it is pretty predictable in its reveal but it's all good fun either way.

  • Legends are created to inspire, scare, obey and for entertainment. Sometimes for some people, it's a great opportunity to utilise the concept to do illegal things. Whatever this movie is about you must observe carefully and try to apply these theories. You will get the story, but enjoying watching it is up to what you were expecting and what it delivered. If you had seen numerous similar horror-thriller, then you feel awful.Belgian horror-thriller, well, that's what they say, but I doubt it. It sets in the summer scout camp, which is directed by a newcomer. A thirteen member of the scout team heads to the woods to set a camp. But it was about a 12 year old Sam, who is a cub scout. He's a first choice of pick to bully by his fellow scouts, especially by the den leader as well by one particular pack leader. He's always late, weak and his over imagination makes him a weirdo in the herd. During in the camp, he discovers what was said to be a legend is real. Not bothers to convince others since they never going to believe him. His adventure is to go deep and discover the secrets, but all the above finds the right place for his essence."Kai does exist. He lives in a tree house in the woods."The 'Marina' girl was in a prominent role. In this 80 minute movie every role was a prominent one. There was no time to develop character, but simply a straight forward presentation. Began with the spilling werewolf concept and it did not hold longer the suspense. Once you know it's not a horror, but a thriller you would lose the interest. Follows the cliche, the same old killings without the reasons or proper explanation. Well, at that time of the story that how it looked, but sooner or later you will know the truth. It's not only the camp versus the whoever hunting/haunting them. It's about the basic instinct, the first reaction to the situations. There is no surprise on the pack leaders, their's behavior is not just based on the fiction, merely true in reality.Traps were the best parts compared to the killings, but too short to have pleasure. Initially I expected it to be a children's horror movie since they are involved, but there are some contents that do restrict them from watching it. Commercial recognise is very important for filmmakers, so they didn't fear to bring the cliche on. I still feel the end should have been a little creative and a fresh idea could have served it well. Not only the end you are going to predict, well, almost everything before from happening.Keeping mystery is the key factor for a movie if the director and writer want to surprise the viewers. Does that 'hold-back' is good enough to satisfy the audience during the twist is the question. First half of the movie nicely keeps the suspense, all about the next half where smartness lacks. Actually, there is no twist at all, the story itself reveals from beginning till the end. All we have to do is figure it out ourselves what this battle is about, other than good versus bad. I'm itching to say it, but it'll spoil if you have not seen the movie yet, so I let you find yourself. As the Belgians perspective the film is okay kind, but not to the rest of the world. Overall an average movie compared to the international standards, but the production quality is impressive. A nice concept, set off very well, but the blow is maybe the influence of Hollywood in today's world cinemas, especially in this genre that did not help to finish it off ably. The days gone by this movie will be forgotten, but I believe in this filmmaker who has a good knack for this type of films will definitely come up with another brilliant product in a near future.6/10

  • Definitely different, breaks a lot of the Hollywood norms. Makes little sense, but instead of trying to answer "why" the whole movie just poses, "why not?"

  • Good Belgian horror, with a bullying story of a traumatised Cub boy on a misterious wood. The movie has a solid story, that gets bloodier in the middle to the end, that I liked - maybe the critics wanted a happy ending?

  • Resulting from another successful Indiegogo campaign, Cub is a no-holds barred Belgian slasher flick that benefits from being an indie movie free from the constricting reins of studio meddling. The directorial debut of Jonas Govaerts, Cub is rooted in old school horror conventions that Govaerts and co-writer Roel Mondelaers successfully meld with fantasy elements with a coming of age tale at its forefront.A bully victim and complete pushover, Sam's veiled past puts him under the close scrutiny of harsh pack leader, Chris (Titus De Voodgt) and Peter (Stef Aerts) - along with Jasmijn (Evelien Bosmans) - who are charged with looking after the twelve-year-old. Grappling with the treatment in the Scout pack due to being anti-social and a social outcast, Sam finds refuge from the bullies in the troop by retreating into the woods after the two pack leaders play up a local legend about a werewolf - called "Kai" - residing in the forest.Atmospheric and well-acted, Cub's beautiful near-fantastical imagery - aided by the cinematographer Nicolas Karakatsanis of The Drop (2014) - occurs whenever Sam wanders off into the woods by leaving the pressures stemming from the cusp of adolescence that he is pinned under. His escapades prove to be a - tonally and thematic - departure from the contrasting atmosphere within the actual camp. This isn't to say Cub comes up short as a horror movie. Scenes go back and forth to detail the events that occur in and out of the camp site, with those outside building up to the eventual climax involving Sam and the preying eyes amidst the trees. Relying at times on jump scares, Govaerts execution is skilful as each rare occurrence of a scare feels natural rather than a contrived event meant solely to jolt the viewer in their seat momentarily.Though the entirety of Cub is a solid, consistent horror entry, it does have misgivings, particularly with how the antagonists aren't fleshed out in the least. If "Kai" and "the Man" were terrible horror villains, their development wouldn't really matter, but due to the excellent delivery of both, viewers might be left wanting in the duo's execution department due to their shrouded background being buried beneath a vehicular graveyard.

  • Starts out pretty decent with good atmosphere but winds up with way too many plot holes.

  • I don't know why, eventhough there is a cliche part or two, "Cub" is still fresh and entertaining near-slasher action horror film.
