A handful of teenagers make the mistake of baring their souls to the wrong person in this thriller. Eva (Imogen Poots) is a young model whose good looks and poise disguise her aching doubts about herself and her wishes she could be more like others. Jim (Matthew Beard) is still wrestling with the demons brought on by a painful childhood and tries to beat back his fears with drugs. Emily (Hannah Murray) feels plain and unattractive and is filled with resentment towards her ambitious father and mother. And Mo (Daniel Kaluuya) struggles with his sexual desires for children, in particular the sister of a close friend. These four young people are frequent visitors to an internet chat room, where they can talk about their fears and anxieties while being drawn out by the compassionate moderator. But the man who runs the chat room is not all he seems. William (Aaron Johnson) is the unstable and neglected son of a successful author (Megan Dodds); he's grown to hate his more confident brother Ripley (Richard Madden) and has established the chat room in order to manipulate others to his own ends by getting them to share their secrets and using this knowledge against them. Chatroom was the second English-language feature from Japanese horror veteran Hideo Nakata. ~ Mark Deming, Rovi

  • I'm either a complete ignorant regarding cinema's art or have the technological savvy of a granny who stills calls a PS4 nintendo but nevertheless i found this movie to be quite appealing unlike the rest of the world. Thou I might agree that the pace and the quality of the actors was a bit over reasonable, the central theme and the conversion to the on-line world got me completely hooked. The contrast of the grey real characters into enthusiastic colorful on-line characters was to me the most interesting and subtle detail which mixed with topics as powerful as suicide and faceless manipulation made the watching of this movie quite remarkable

  • Things have changed quite a bit since when this movie was released but it does present a good conceptual panarama of things happening in social media

  • 6.7/10The quality or cinematography wasn't the best, but with some familiar faces and enough tension to keep the action going, I thought it was a pretty effective thriller for the most part in its final act. Also, the acting was mostly good, and although not a horror movie it worked well as a thriller. Moreover, I too liked the way the virtual chat room was portrayed as an actual place where they interacted. Which was quite different and added something different. ~March 6, 2015~

  • I don't understand why the ratings are so terrible for this movie. I thought it was amazing. The way it was filmed and the way we see the Internet as a hotel room. We see William live out his depression through Jim. The ending had me shocked and in tears.

  • I get what the film makers were doing with thia. it's a good movie that has a creepy and intense feel to it. The acting was good and the portrayal of the Internet and real life differences was done amazingly. The down side of this getting some bad reviews is that it's too little too late. had this been released with the rise of the Internet and the popularity with chat rooms at the time this would have done phenomenal. Since it was recently done it's not quite as effective as it should have been.

  • I liked the idea of the movie and the way chatrooms are portrayed throughout the movie. It was unique and fun to watch. The story was something different too, but the execution was a little poor according to me. The story was a little bit weird at times and felt random and that was a downside. I liked Aaron's acting. A different take on chatrooms and the internet (suicide) culture.

  • Dark and disturbing subject (online suicide clubs) for sure, but it is director Hideo Nakata's (Ringu) handling of it that makes this film shine and brings it to life. Unique and visually appealing blend of the real and virtual worlds really makes the character interactions pop and does a nice job representing the seductive appeal of cyberspace.

  • Admittedly, very very depressing and has some plot holes. But, this psychological thriller about depression really manages to put you into the dark mind of a young unstable person. The re-enactment of the chatrooms are very clever, quite literally putting people in different rooms to chat, and Aaron Taylor-Johnson gives a strong performance. Ultimatly, this film may sometimes be a slightly over-the-top British melodrama, but it's worth sticking with for a very exciting, thrilling ending and some clever concepts.

  • I really enjoyed this film and found Nakata's blurring of the boundary between the real world and the cyber world constructed in such a way that I felt "chilled" throughout.
