It's the summer of 1980 and Björn Borg (Sverrir Gudnason) is the top tennis player in the world, dominating the sport both on and off the court. A powerful and rigorously disciplined player, there is only one obstacle in his pursuit of a record-breaking fifth Wimbledon championship: the highly talented but ferociously abrasive young American, John McEnroe (a perfectly cast Shia LaBeouf). With three days until the tournament begins, Borg trains religiously in his lavish Monaco home, aided by his coach and mentor Lennart (Stellan Skarsgård) and girlfriend Mariana (Tuva Novotny). But McEnroe's explosive confidence and wrecking-ball persona continue to infiltrate Borg's ice-cool and normally unshakable temperament. With each man the antithesis of the other, both players delve into their formative memories as the climactic tournament draws near and anticipation reaches fever pitch. Visceral and breathlessly tense, the match itself--regarded as one of the greatest of all time--would mark the pinnacle of the 'Fire and Ice' rivalry between Borg and McEnroe; an exhilarating battle of personalities that set the world of tennis alight.

  • Borg vs. McEnroe - 4 out 5 - Borg Vs. McEnroe biographical sports drama film focusing on the famous rivalry between famous tennis players Björn Borg and John McEnroe at the 1980 Wimbledon Championships, culminating in their encounter in the men's singles final. The film is directed by Janus Metz Pedersen, and stars Sverrir Gudnason, Shia LaBeouf, Stellan SkarsgÃ¥rd, Tuva Novotny, and Robert Emms. (Wikipedia)This movie was a well done bio-pic that might not be for everyone. It tells the story of the top two tennis players in 1980 and gives a little back story on their mentality towards tennis and how they each approach the game differently but ultimately have the same goal in mind. It's a wonderful thinking movie that draws you in.This movie is a watch but so far its been limited release. I saw it at the UICA in Grand Rapids, MI. If your not able to see it in theaters then definitely rent it when you are able to. I feel it is at least worth seeing one time its Shia LaBeouf at his best. For anyone who has seen this movie let me know your thoughts in the comments below but please remember no spoilers.

  • An absolutely great film with a lot of depth from the actors. Shia Lebeouf is great but Gudnason who PlayStation Borg is great! I thought this would be a boring tennis film but there's more about the personality of each player than playing. Loved it.

  • Borg Vs. McEnroe could have been great if it didn't try to be so ambitious.

  • A good film about 2 of the all time great tennis stars in centered on the of the all time great Grand Slam finals. Where the film fails, is it's inability to decide whether to make this more of a "character" study of the two tennis phenoms or more of a tennis biopic. Ultimately, it falls somewhere in the middle which isn't necessarily bad, but a movie probably only enjoyed by the tennis lover.

  • Perfectly cast, this film beautiful captures the fascinating dynamic between two of the sport's most mythical figures and provides insight into the minds of two troubled men, all the while capturing the intensity of one of the greatest matches ever played

  • This movie was incredibly good. It has a lot of history about a very fierce competition between two world class players. I highly recommend it. You can feel the tension of the matches and how much pressure these players had. Incredible.

  • Borg vs mcenroe est fort probablement l'un des meilleurs films sur le tennis grâce en partie à shia labeouf qui délivre aisément l'une de ses plus belles prestations en carrière. definitivement à voir pour les amateurs du sport.

  • I don't know how much of the private stories is true, or if the beautiful sentence "If you can meet with Triumph and Disaster, And treat those two impostors just the same" was really written on top of the 2 players before entering the field. What I do know is that the tension of the last match is almost unbearable for the watcher, so I cannot even imagine how diffucult must have been for the players. Two players different but alike, with their stories and with their emotions. And in this movie you find it all. (I want to add that if you don't know who will win the game, you'll like the film much more!)

  • I am not a sport's person, besides looking at the hot guys, football does my head in. I don't mind following soccer but watching a full game puts me to sleep, golf kills me, swimming is awesome, but maybe this is the hot guy thing again haha. Tennis, however, is one game I have always remotely followed. It is like a battle to the death of fit sport's masters. I actually played competition tennis for a few years and while I was dreadful, as I just didn't have a competitive streak, it harnessed a love for the game. When I heard of BORG VS MCENROE I wanted to see it. When I saw the trailer I already knew I would like it and when I came out of the screening I was enraptured at not only one of the best movies of 2017 but in love with what I consider one of the best sport's movies of all time.FULL REIEW IS NOW ON SALTY POPCORN

  • It's without question that sports dramas that are based on true stories usually have a nice emotional core or intensity to them, otherwise what would be the point of making them in the first place. Borg/McEnroe is one of the latest true stories centered around a sport to receive the big screen treatment. Also seeing the return of Shia LaBeouf in a committed role, this movie has a lot going for it that had me excited. Happily, I can say that this is a movie made with care and the overall impact of the film is felt by the time the credits roll. I truly believe that a little bit of everyone out in the world can compare themselves to certain aspects of the two title characters. Although this movie is very small in terms of its theatre count, here's why I believe it deserves your time.As the film leads up to the inevitable Wimbledon finals in the year 1980, Borg/McEnroe follows Bjorn Borg and John McEnroe as it dives into their past and how they may or may not be able to cope with losing the title match in the coming days. This is a very simplistic film that follows these two competitors as they await the match, and then the movie goes out with a bang in keeping you on the edge of your seat as you await the victor. This is also where I found my biggest complaint with the film, seeing as its runtime was a little long for its type of storytelling.Even at a mere 107 minutes, this movie felt a little long, due to the fact that you're really just waiting for the day to come where these two competitors will be going head to head. It felt as though the flashbacks were there to give this film a real feature length feel, but in reality, it ended up feeling like filler. That being said, Borg/McEnroe manages to hold your interest, because each and every one of the flashbacks are interesting (even if it's slightly boring at times). I truly believe that this movie is able to hold everyone's attention because Sverrir Gudnason and Shia LaBeouf give terrific performances here.Being the first time I've seen Sverrir Gudnason on-screen, I can't wait to see more of him, because not only did he look just like Bjorn Borg, but his committed performance really took his character over the edge in my opinion. LaBeouf definitely holds his own as well. Being absent from cinema for the past few years, it was uncertain when his return would be, but I think he will have a perfect fit in independent films such as Borg/McEnroe. His eccentric character got a few laughs and a few tears from the audience and when an actor can accomplish both, he, along with the filmmakers, have done something right.Although not really known for anything mainstream yet, writer Ronnie Sandahl and director Janus Metz definitely have bright futures if they choose to break out even further. The screenplay was very well-written in my opinion, giving just the right amount of levity before getting too serious, and then letting loose throughout the tense tennis sequences as well. I would love to see these two team up again. In the end, Borg/McEnroe is a very, very good film from start to finish. Although simplistic, emotion and tension run rampant throughout. Written and directed with care, acted spectacularly, and delivering a satisfying conclusion even for those who knew the outcome, I really don't have anything negative to say, aside from the fact that it can feel boring at times and a little dragged out to fit a feature film runtime. I recommend checking out Borg/McEnroe when you get the chance. It's a very solid story about two rivals that live very different lives, so to speak.

  • Although this film may lack in some noticeable areas, there's not many films about tennis out there, defaulting this as one of the best tennis films I've seen in a long time. The third film I got to see at the Chicago International Film Festival. How has my experience been there? Honestly, it's been pretty great. It's fun, I'm in a great environment with other film lovers, and it truly feels like an event. With this film, it wasn't the perfect film, but I still thoroughly enjoyed it. One thing that stands out in this film are the performances. Both Sverrir Gudnason and Shia LaBeouf are strong leads for this film, bringing out the characters and personal of the real life men they're portraying. Gudnason's character is very stoic, calm, and a by the books guy. He has his strict pre-game rituals and procedures. On the other hand, McEnroe is a hectic, undisciplined, emotional player. These are two completely different guys competing for the same thing, but with different journeys. I like seeing their passion and their desires to win, and just how much winning will mean to them.I like this because you kind of see what it's like to be in this position. You have Borg, a 4x Wimbledon champion with an enormous amount of pressure on him to win another title. He can't go anywhere without being bothered, and he's constantly stressed. You see how these characters are in their own time, which makes it easier to relate to them. You can learn just what kind of men they are and that's what makes it a solid characters study. Now I thought this movie was badly paced. It moved really fast at times, if not overly fast. Then it would move slow at other times. It was pretty messy and it was a little confusing as to which timeline we were in sometimes. They never really show much actual tennis playing until the very end, which I was actually bummed out by. But I think if they cleaned up the film a bit more and focused on less side stories, it would've felt much smoother. I don't think this film is the strongest overall. It has a lot of solid moments but the film looked like it was constantly leading toward something and never finished. Granted, I thought the final act was very intense. I was holding onto the edge of my seat but if it weren't for the exciting final moments, I would've pinned the movie as mediocre at best. It just didn't really excel in any one area of filmmaking and with that, it didn't have the strongest editing, pacing, or storytelling. I think the film was a little confused about what it was trying to do, in the end resulting in a messier film.I think this is definitely something you can still enjoy, even with its flaws. It has some great performances and it's interesting to dive into another historical sporting event. And it also just leaves a nice warm feeling in your heart. Even with its flaws, I would still recommend this to sports fan and movie fans alike.

  • A tense duo character portrait in where both characters are accentuated individually. I happened to like both of them very much and could convey sympathy for them since I could understand how hard it is to go through that process. It?s ironic how they are polar-opposites in attitude but yet they still can find that common ground. I wouldn?t say the best biopic I?ve seen but it?s nowhere near scraping the bottom.
