  • First-time director Cory Bowles' 'Black Cop' is part gritty drama, part biting satire and altogether unsettling. As a devastating examination of racial profiling within the police force, the premise couldn't be more topical, and Bowles never once flinches from the uncomfortable moral dilemmas his film brings to the table. As the titular cop pushed beyond his limits, Toronto actor Ronnie Rowe Jr. is sensational here; even at his most despicable, Rowe never lets his character's bubbling rage distract from the lifetime of pain that fuels it. It's a supremely confident debut by a Canadian director whose voice is sorely needed.
