5.4 Age of Heroes
Drama, Special Interest, Art House & International
Today, many remember Ian Fleming (1908-64) as the author of such books as the James Bond series and Chitty Chitty Bang Bang, but less-commonly known are the details of his involvement in World War II. Fleming began as an intelligence liaison under the aegis of Rear Admiral John Godfrey, and then in 1942 formed a crack team of intelligence-based commandos, known as the 30 Assault Unit; its job involved operating near the front lines of battle to seize top-secret documents from enemy headquarters that had been targeted in advance. As directed by Adrian Vitoria, the period saga Age of Heroes dramatizes the 30 Assault Unit's wartime adventures. The cast includes Sean Bean, Danny Dyer, Rosie Fellner and Aksel Hennie. Vitoria co-authored the script with Ed Scates.

  • This movie was really quite rivetting, with strong performances and a great story. I would have wanted it to be longer.

  • War film a bit short in people. It has a very realistic and unrehearsed tone that is best during the shooting sequences. We feel right there with the bullets flying around. Otherwise, it feels like a tv movie at times. The music is annoying and distracting as if the drama was not obvious enough. The insane things done at war do not amount to much heroism though, when you think about it.

  • This movie showed a realistic operation n with all the twists & turns that it entails. It's not like a USA film where it all magically rights itself but shows the bravery of soldiers in a no win situation who then win.

  • Age of Heroes stands as the dramatization of Ian Fleming's commando unit during WWII. This is a very good adaptation of the story, with Sean Bean as the commander. The movie was action packed and thrilling. It felt real and you feel you are fighting amongst the Irish and British men. Definitely check this one out.

  • Fairly conventional low-budget WWII movie about a small unit on a special operation in Norway. If you're looking for big budget special effects or painstaking accuracy in small details Age of Heroes isn't a movie you'll enjoy. On the other hand, the plot is believable (loosely based on a mission by 30 Commando), there's plenty of action, the acting is decent, and it doesn't drag in places as often happens with war movies. Oh, and Izabella Miko is a knockout as a Norwegian resistance fighter.

  • Watched it twice... gripped me from the start.. well scripted, well directed, acting excellent... gives an authentic feel to the reality of those times, the toughness of the men and the dangers they faced with a ruthless enemy snapping at their heels... dyer was very credible... and the whole film is put in context throughout... who needs Hollywood budgets when our boys do a great job with the budget they have.

  • Fairly average WW2 action pic, but with the interesting twist that it attempts to portray one of the operations Ian Fleming ran before inventing James Bond. I didn't think Danny Dyer was going to make for a good Fleming and he doesn't - he's one of the rough diamonds who joins Fleming's Commandoes and he's quite good as that. The film is fairly reminiscent of The Heroes Of Telemark ( Commandoes, Norway, lots of snow).

  • While realistic, surprising, and possessing brief moments of brilliance- an inadequate conclusion and problematic pacing keep this Bean-movie from his hall of glory.

  • An okay film let down by an abysmal "oh dear, the budget's ran out" ending...

  • This film seems like a straight to DVD release with it's cheap British cast and cheaply filmed action scenes.
