7.0 Los ojos de Julia (Julia's Eyes)
Horror, Mystery & Suspense, Art House & International
A woman is trying to unravel a mystery that she literally can no longer see in this thriller from Spanish filmmaker Guillem Morales. Julia (Bel (C)n Rueda) and her sister, Sara, have both inherited a medical condition that is slowly robbing them of their eyesight, with stress severely aggravating the condition. When Julia gets the news that Sara has died, she has a hard time believing the police report that she committed suicide, and she and her husband, Isaac (Llus Homar), begin looking into the matter. As Julia examines the particulars of Sara's death, she begins to suspect the actions of Sara's neighbor Blasco (Boris Ruiz), his daughter, Lia (Andrea Hermosa), and an aged woman named Soledad (Julia Guti (C)rrez Caba). As Julia becomes more convinced that Sara's neighbors were involved in her death, unpleasant events begin happening all around her, and as she comes closer to unraveling the knots that have tied up Sara's death, Julia inches closer to total blindness. Produced in part by Guillermo del Toro, Los Ojos de Julia (aka Julia's Eyes) was an official selection at the 2010 Toronto International Film Festival. ~ Mark Deming, Rovi

  • A decent thriller moving in horror paths, it could be a bit shorter though..

  • Julia's Eyes (or) Los ojos de Julia, 2010, Spanish with English Subtitles. Nonstop tension in this absolutely fantastic thriller, mystery & horror movie. Guillermo del Toro was a producer and even though he did not write or direct it this film still feels like one of his. This is a must watch.

  • I love Spanish horror so much and Julia's Eyes is another good one that I can add to my long list of good ones. The supernatural elements blended intricately with the very real idea of being stalked, and massively shared nightmare of being rendered blind mix very well into a horror that features excellent cinematography (directed by Pan's Labyrinth's Guillermo del Toro) and very honest and brave acting from the title character. The grey, dullish tones bode for a few boring moments and sometimes the story zooms from point to point and its dizzying.

  • Anyone who has seen Guillermo Del Toro's film, Pan's Labyrinth, knows he has made a masterpiece (in my humble opinion). Those who have not watched his Spanish films may be more familiar with his film, Mama. Whilst Mama is inferior to Pans Labyrinth and more Hollywood, in style, I found it to be exceptionally creepy; as any good horror movie should be. Julia's Eyes is an excellent horror/suspense/thriller. It leaves you guessing as to if the events unfolding are supernatural or the works of a madman. I do wish American's watched more films with subtitles because this is a film, like Pan's Labyrinth, that could not be topped if remade by Hollywood recasting simply to have it in English. This is and excellent film from start to finish that at times has you on the edge of you seat.

  • a nicely directed thriller that I had different thoughts of what it was and yet came out of it pleasantly pleased with the outcome. there's moments where you are in julias eyes with everyone and question what is going on but that just enhances the feel of what she is going through. decent watch

  • Formulaic but entertaining enough.

  • Don't miss it. The scariest film of the year. Belen Rueda is marvellous in this gritty, scary, original horror flick.

  • Kept me on the edge of my seat the whole movie. Started of with all the lights off but had to turn some lights on halfway through. A really good thriller.

  • Absolutely the best horror/suspense movie I have seen in ages! The first half makes you play around with the who's who, which eventually paves the way for one memorable climax.

  • The stunning cinematography creates a perfect oppressive atmosphere in this thriller that grows really tense and frightening, but the film is also weakened by poor narrative choices, and if you think in retrospect you will see some plot holes. Besides, the lame last scene is unforgivable.

  • This movie had quite a few surprises along the way. The story was nicely wrapped up with a bittersweet conclusion.

  • 72%Saw this on 29/8/15Julia's eyes has the pacing and tension much requisite for any mystery film, but had it ever had the story element that it's tensely directed sequence deserved, it would have been more fruitful. I also disliked the fact that the film did not have any big twists to offer. Belen Rueda gives a noteworthy performance. The intention of the antagonist is unclear, how he possibly expects to be invisible and what he can possibly do to all the blind girls in the world who can sense him. It's also unclear as to why the antagonist has such grudge against the sisters.
